Labels feed and apply correctly only when the roll matches your applicator. The core size, outer diameter, unwind direction and gap all have to be right. This guide explains how labels are applied by hand or machine and the roll specifications a labeling machine needs, so your labels run without jams, mis-feeds or labels applied the wrong way round.

Applying Labels by Hand or Machine
How you apply labels changes what the roll needs to be. Hand application is forgiving; a machine needs the roll built to exact specs.
Hand Application
Labels applied by hand suit small runs, samples and irregular shapes. They can be supplied on rolls or sheets and are more forgiving of exact roll specs.
- Best for — short runs, prototypes, launches and odd-shaped items.
- Supplied as — rolls or sheets, whichever is easier to peel and place.
- Roll specs — flexible; core and unwind matter less when placing by hand.
Machine Application
An applicator applies labels at speed for higher volumes, but needs the roll built to its exact core, outer diameter, unwind and gap so the line runs cleanly.

- Supplied as — rolls built to the machine's core, OD and unwind.
- Roll specs — precise; core, OD, unwind and gap must match the applicator.
Roll Core Size and Outer Diameter
Two roll dimensions decide whether a roll fits your machine — the inner core and the finished outer diameter. Both are common industry sizes, but the right ones depend on your applicator.
Core Size
The inner core diameter fits over the applicator's mandrel. Common industry sizes are used across most machines. Send the one your applicator takes.

The finished roll diameter must stay within the maximum your machine can hold. A larger OD means fewer roll changes, but only up to your applicator's limit.

Unwind direction sets which way the label faces as it comes off the roll. There are eight standard positions, and the machine needs the right one specified.
- Eight positions — the label's orientation and whether it leads from the top, bottom, left or right gives eight standard unwind positions.
- Why it matters — the wrong unwind can apply a label upside-down or mirrored on the line.
- Specify it — tell us the unwind position (1–8) your applicator needs, or send the applicator model and we will match it.
Gap, Spacing and Wind Direction
How labels sit on the liner affects sensing and feeding. The gap, the number across and the wind all decide how cleanly the roll runs.
Gap
The space between labels lets the applicator's sensor find the leading edge of each label. Too small a gap and the sensor cannot separate one label from the next.
Labels Across
Labels can run in one lane or several across the web, depending on the label size and the machine. More across the web can mean more labels per roll for wider applicators.
Wind
Labels are wound facing in or out on the roll, set by the applicator. Wind in or wind out pairs with the unwind direction so the label reaches the surface the right way round.
